For myself, I can say I'm mostly interested in the day-to-day living aspect. I'm curious about the aspects of living in Japan which are different from the US, especially the things we'd never think of, like the different bathroom setup, or that milk at the store is stored at room temperature in antiseptic packaging.
If there is anything you want/need which you can't acquire, don't hesitate to say so. It's sometimes remarkable what is and isn't available overseas. For example, it's apparently impossible to find apple-cinnamon Pop-Tarts in Sweden.

I do have an odd request: if you have a chance, please go to a McDonald's just once. I'm serious. Unlike some American chains, McDonald's does modify their menu considerably for the local palate - they served fried chicken with rice and gravy in Manila. So I'm actually rather curious as to what a Japanese McDonald's is like, what is the same and what is different.

The chado is interesting, but as you're aware, I don't think I'll grasp all, or even most, of it. If it were that easy, you wouldn't be spending a year studying it!

I'm also insanely curious about your mon. I recall how much I angsted about selecting my SCA device, and that's considerably less important. I don't know if I could have sat at a store and picked one.
